Negotiating makes you anxious. You’re not quite sure what’s the highest salary you can ask for, nor what overall job offer package you can pull together.
If you’re offered a salary at the lower band of a companies budget, or if a company doesn’t share their budget, negotiating can be tricky.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t give you more than this,” your future manager says.
So what do you do?
Well instead of assuming you can only get what you’re given, know there strategic things you can do to negotiate and land your best job offer ever.
The trick is knowing not only how to negotiate, but also what to ask for. Companies that can’t move on budget, can often give you something else that’ll feel rewarding.

But in today’s blog post, I’m sharing 5 things you can ask for in a negotiation besides salary that’ll make your new job more rewarding than receiving additional money.
#1 – Ask for a Mentor
Your development is essential for delivering your best work.
So ask your manager if you can be assigned a mentor or begin their formal mentoring programme so you learn how to best perform and navigate in your new workplace.
Asking this not only shows you’re interested in doing the job, it shows you’re willing to be led and are keen to learn from the best within the company.
Big corporations typically have a mentoring programme. And if a company doesn’t have one, ask your manager if you can have time together to be coached on how you can deliver better work.
Mentors can teach you things some people take years to learn. It can help you develop productive and healthy work habits and deliver better quality work than you would have, had you not had a mentor.
#2 – Have the flexibility to work where you perform best
Do you find you do your best work at home? Or in a coffee shop?
If you find noisy offices distracting or find it difficult to get work done when you’re in meetings all day everyday, ask if you can have the flexibility to work from your preferred location once a week or once a fortnight.
This will give you the quiet space you need to get things done.
#3 – Invest in your training and career development
Companies love having employees who grow and get better with time. They love it when you’ve learned something relevant to your role and can solve a complex problem other people haven’t cracked.
Stay on top of best practice and ask a company to support and sponsor your training. The more relevant and critical the training is to your role, the more valuable you’ll be to the company and the more impact you’ll have.
People who don’t continue to learn, keep doing things the way they’ve been doing it. They often continue to make the same mistakes and struggle to solve the most complex of problems.
#4 – Choose your ideal start time or end time
The whole idea of working 9 to 5 isn’t as strict as you may believe.
According to a study by Catalyst, 4 out of 5 highly educated employees around the world value having flexible work times. This means, having the opportunity to work from 8am or 10am or finish at 4pm or 7pm, depending on when you prefer to work.
Flexible working isn’t just for working mothers. It’s also for people who know that they do their best work at a certain time in the day. Get clear on what hours you’d prefer to work and negotiate on this if you can.
#5 – Work on projects you’ll enjoy and learn from the most
Last but not least, ask to work on the projects you’re most interested in. This is particularly important if you’re a consultant or work in client services.
There’s a saying that “Beggers can’t be choosers.” Even if as a new team member you feel you can’t work on certain projects because you’re in a different team or you don’t have the right experience or skillset to be handpicked for the team… don’t let that stop you.
Take the initiative to let your manager know in advance the kinds of projects you’re most interested in working on. Particularly if it’s relevant to your role.
Asking is the only way your manager will know what you’re interested in and will consider you or refer you for a project.
